To avoid boredom, give free rein to your desire for outings and discoveries. On vacation in New Aquitaine, why not go and meet the faunal life of the La Palmyre zoo? Nestled between Royan and the island of Oléron, this landscaped gem is among the most beautiful and largest parks in Charente-Maritime, and even in all of France. Alone or with family, enjoy discovering the residents of this natural site during your stay at the Vieux Moulin campsite.
Explore every corner of this zoo
Spread over 18 hectares, the La Palmyre zoo allows you to see no less than 1,500 species of mammals, reptiles and birds. These animals belong to around 115 different species, coming from all continents. With each discovery, you will have the impression of going around the world, all while being in the same place. Throughout your visit, let yourself be charmed by some endangered animal species, including the scimitar-horned orangutan, the Bornean orangutan and the golden lion tamarin. Alongside the latter, the enormous Asian elephants, rhinos, polar bears and cercopithecines will be happy to brighten up your visit. If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to see giraffes, pandas and tigers up close, this place is ideal for planning an outing.
Over time, the park continues to increase the number of its residents, to the great pleasure of visitors and those responsible for the place. The center records births every year, including that of the magnificent Sri Lankan panther named Piumi in 2019. Also, the arrival of two polar bears and two ring-tailed lemurs have increased its numbers. Note that the zoo animals are placed in enclosures reproducing their natural habitat, thus guaranteeing them better development.
Attend several events in this animal center
Children will not have time to be bored in this surprisingly rich place. Several events, ranging from Easter to All Saints’ Day, are held in the park. During your stay here, you can, for example, attend parrot shows, without forgetting those of sea lions. Shows that will certainly captivate more than one, especially the youngest. Activities take place there in the morning and in the evening.
Find out about visiting times
From the outset, be aware that the site only offers visits and therefore no accommodation. This tourist attraction remains open every day. It is therefore accessible to visitors from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from the beginning of April to the end of September. From October to March, on the other hand, the park usually closes, from 6 p.m. in principle. Regarding visit costs, the site offers prices for children (15€) and for adults (19€). Visits are, however, free for children under 3 years old. Otherwise, you can take out a subscription to visit the Palmyre zoo whenever you feel like it.
